Abstract

Agro-forestry is a land management system and technology where evergreen plants are deliberately used on the same land management units as agricultural crops and animals, in either a spatial arrangement, there being both ecological and economical interactions between the different components. In other words, “Agro-forestry is a system combing agricultural and tree crops of varying longevity of evergreen plants arranged either temporally or spatially to maximize and sustain aggregate yields. ‘Thus, Agro-forestry is basically a multi dimensional system or approach. It involves two or more than species of the plants. The system usually generates two or more outputs having more than one annual cycle. It is ecologically and economically, more a complex system than a mono cropping system. Agro-forestry ice comprehensive term for different form of land use combining trees and scrubs with agricultural plants and livestock on the same unit of land either alternates or at the same time, using management practiced suiting the socio-economic conditions of the people and system is ecologically and economically viable.In Agro-forestry system multipurpose trees are preferred having characteristics of Nitrogen-taking ability, high growth rate, cropping ability and multi-purpose use.
