Indian Ocean faces many problems like safeguarding environment and ensuring sea-lane safety, control of global terrorism and illicit traffic of drugs and arms through it. Hinterland, littoral and island states have to unitedly build a common safety platform to withstand rigorous of 21st century globalization. Availability of important marine life and minerals and lucrative trade passing through Indian Ocean, makes regional cooperation among member states an imperative for many purposes like ship-building, preventing ocean water pollution through ship wreckage and oil leakages, exploitation and protection of fisheries and marine life, minerals, oil and natural gas.
