Abstract

The antimutagenic effect of caffeine was investigated against Mthyl methanesulfonate (MMS) induced mutation by using the drosophila wing mosaic assay. In this assay transhetreogyous larvae multiple wing hair (mwh 3-0.3) and flare (flr3-38.8) genes were used as markers. The results obtained from MMS were clearly genotoxic in the drosophila wing somatic mutation and recombination test. The calculated concentration of caffeine as recommended dietary allowance did not induce the frequency of the mutant clones somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) recorded. When pre treatment of caffeine experiments was carried out, the caffeine was effective in reducing the genotoxicity of alkylating mutagen -Methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) in different regime.
