Abstract

The present research paper deals with the treatment of romantic love in Shakespeare’s comedies and how as a subtle souled psychologist he has treated the theme of romantic love in his comedies and even in his tragedies. When we read his plays we come across love in all its forms and kinds. His plays deal with romantic love, materialistic love, sexual love, blind or irrational love, spiritual love, patriotic love, love for nature etc. But here our focus is on Shakespeare’s concept of romantic love and how he has dealt with this theme in his plays. In fact , love is the chief leitmotif of his comedies. It regulates his comedies and gives them the charm and vitality. According to Shakespeare romantic love is blind, irrational, first sight love, spiritual and steadfast. The lovers have to face many hardships before the fulfillment of their love. His treatment of love is psychological and natural. It is nowhere artificial.
