Abstract

The research was carried out to study the socio-economicproblems of auto rickshaw drivers in the city of Jalgaon. As the study was exploratory in nature, no hypotheses were established. A sample of 100 Auto-Rickshaw Drivers (ARDs) was selected for the study. The study finds that majority of the auto-rickshaw drivers were Hindus, belong to backward communities, hardworking, married, literate, young or middle aged, Marathi speaking. Small family, live in rented houses, low standard of living, migrated from nearby areas in search of livelihood. ARDs do not carry a favorable opinion about the police and RTO, and are not willing to introduce their children in this occupation. ARDs earn an average income of Rs. 11,500/- per month for 12 hours of work daily. The suggestions include about the unions, ARDs behavior, hospitals, advertisements, identity cards, police authority, training, vehicle loan, co-operative store, agents in RTO office, auto-stands, non-permitted rickshaws, third-party insurance, etc.
