Abstract

Disposal of distillery effluent is a serious problem faced by the distilleries. Because of high organic load and low pH its treatment is necessary prior to disposal on land or in river etc. many physical, chemical and microbiological methods have been suggested for its treatment but they suffer from one or the other drawback. A process was developed at National Sugar Institute Kanpur based on the use of ammonifying bacteria, giving 80 percent reduction in COD and BOD values in 3 to 4 days. In the present study, with the help of new isolated strains, detailed investigations have been carried out to find out optimum conditions for best reduction in pollution and other parameters with a view to improve the process further.
