USING COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH TO INSTRUCT GRAMMAR: AN ATTEMPT TO EXAMINE THE NATURE OF CBSE SYLLABUS IN CENTRAL SCHOOLS

Abstract

This paper is an attempt to examine the nature of grammar teaching in the communicative classroom where communicative approach is used. In the context of the heavy investment by the government and private sectors in terms of research, teacher training and the provision of infrastructure that the communicative approach has enjoyed in the Indian context in recent years, the results especially from learners' perspective formed the basis for this study. It is well-known that teacher perceptions of the communicative approach and actual practice may be two different aspects. This is already been established by many research studies in the international context. However, since CLT has been recommended in schools across India, and the CBSE has introduced the approach to the central schools all over India, an examination of the context in India was considered worthwhile.
