Abstract

Ted Hughes has a very high conception of poetry and believes that the true poetry can replace religion by incorporating its function of uniting man with his lost self. Ted Hughes brings out the inconsistencies of Christianity and refutes the claim that the Christian God can be the only principle at work. He believes that there must be an opposite force outside God. However, at the same time he believes that the devil too cannot be the only force governing the whole universe. He implies that there must be something else, some grey force as well which is also at work in the universe. It is this grey zone—this unaccomodated universe—which has been explored by Ted Hughes in his poetry.
