Abstract

Coaches are always interested in learning ways to help their athletes motivate themselves. Athletes are concerned with maintaining their motivation once they have acquired the drive and desire to succeed at their sport. Motivation is a complex concept involving the combination of direction and intensity of effort in a particular situation. For example: direction – playing for a team or club, attending a coaching clinic or aerobics class, joining a fitness centre, or seeking physiotherapy treatment for an injury: intensity – the amount of effort with which an athlete pursues their chosen direction (Weinberg & Gould, 1995).
