PATTERN OF LITERACY IN SIKKIM: A GEOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS

Abstract

Abstract: The present work is an attempt to study the level of literacy in Sikkim. It upholds about 6, 07,688 lakh out of 1.21 billion of India’s population but literacy rate is above the national average. The study is based on data from the census of India, 2011. The male-female and rural-urban differential have been worked out. The literacy rate of Sikkim was 82.20 per cent. Therefore, the male literacy was 87.30 per cent whereas, female was 76.43 per cent in 2011. The urban and rural literacy were recorded as 89.26 per cent and 79.82 per cent respectively (2011). Moreover, there are narrow gap between male and female and between rural and urban literacy rates in the state.
