Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) are the diseases of the respiratory tract that produce an obstruction to the airflow and affect both mechanical function and gas exchanging capabilities of the lung. According to WHO, COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the world. It has been estimated that by the year 2020, COPD will be fifth among the conditions that will be the highest burden to society on a worldwide scale. COPD causes heavy health & economic burden both in US and around the world. In the last 200 years, recognition and understanding of the pathogenesis of COPD have evolved considerably.
