Abstract

Medicinal leech therapy is an ancient method that dates back to ancient Egypt and the beginnings of civilization. The salivary secretions of leeches contain hirudin as an anticoagulant which keep the blood in liquid form and increasing blood flow in the affected area. The saliva of leeches contains an anesthetic substance, that is the reason leech bites are generally not painful. Leech therapy commonly used for diseases like skin diseases, sciatica, and musculoskeletal pains, used to stimulate circulation.
