PUNJABI SUBA MOVEMENT: A REVISIONIST VIEW

Abstract

The Punjabi Suba movement was the first community-sponsored movement in post-independent India which forsaken the secular credentials of the newly created democratic republic of India. The movement heightens the overtones of religious and separatists tendency of the Sikh community. The movement generally opened the gates of neo- communalism in Punjab which had a history of communal riots in pre-independent India. The paper will analyze the major aspects related to the movement and analyze the kind of aspirations it had for Punjabis generally and the Sikh community particularly, it assesses the responses of political elites related to the movement and describe how the new state of Punjab came into being after the movement.
