Dowry is generally understood as money goods, estate, ornaments or any other kind of wealth that a woman brings to her husband at the time of marriage. Though dowry is both a practice and a problem associated with Indian society, yet the practice of giving dowry in any of the forms mentioned is very common among all the people of the world. It exists in all Communities and nations of the world in one form or the other. When we go in the history of this system, we find that in Indian this is an age old practice. In Rigveda and Atharva Veda there are some hymns which indicate that giving gifts and valuable goods by the father of the daughter to his son-in-law at the time of marriage was prevalent at that time among kings and other royal families.
