Abstract

The present paper analyzes the portrayal of women in the ancient text of Panchatantra as against the women represented in other selected Indian folktales. The researcher uses the feminist theories to bring out the striking differences in these two representations. Panchatantra highlights the traditional gender-based roles of women in a patriarchal social structure, depicts her as a vile, unfaithful, jealous, scheming character, it goes on to objectify women. Anupa Lal, A.K. Ramanujan’s Indian folktales, on the other hand, bring out the strength of woman characters and focus on their witty, resourceful, clever, and intelligent selves.
