Abstract

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 at Porbandar, which was then part of the Bombay Presidency, British India. The Jain traditions of the region influenced the young Mohandas deeply as he absorbed compassion for sentient beings, vegetarianism, fasting for self-purification, mutual tolerance among individuals of different creeds etc. from Jain religion only. The Indian classics, especially the stories of Shravana and Maharaja Harish Chandra, had a great impact on Gandhiji in his childhood as he admits in his autobiography that it lefts an incredible impression on his mind.
